It is that time of the year, in which the world prepares for the fasting...by feasting. Today we celebrate Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday"), reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.
Although it is not celebrated in all of the worlds, the New Orleans, LA Carnival is one of the most spectacular this time around, which brings us to a local favorite, the Sazerac.
Built similarly to an Old Fashioned, this cocktail is named for the Sazerac de Forge et Fils brand of cognac brandy that served as its original main ingredient. And it is created as follows:
Old Fashioned glass
1/4 oz Absinthe
One sugar cube
1.5 oz Rye whiskey or Cognac
Three dashes Peychaud's Bitters
1. Rinse a chilled old-fashioned glass with the absinthe, add crushed ice and set it aside.
2. Stir the remaining ingredients over ice and set it aside.
3. Discard the ice and any excess absinthe from the prepared glass, and strain the drink into the glass.
4. Add the Lemon peel for garnish.
Now, get yourself a drink. You deserve it!
